  9. This month we will finally learn

  11. enough to make some music.  Let's

  13. see, you learned about ADSR two

  15. months ago and waveform last month...

  17. I guess you're old enough now to
  18.  
  19. learn about pitch.

  25.   At last we've reached a topic we
  26.  
  27. can relate directly and exactly to
  28.  
  29. something in the real world.  Pitch
  30.  
  31. refers to the... er... pitch of a
  32.  
  33. note.  That is, the voice of a
  34.  
  35. screaming thrush is high-pitched, and
  36.  
  37. a foghorn is low-pitched.
  38.  
  39.   In technical terms, pitch is
  40.  
  41. frequency.  High pitch = high
  42.  
  43. frequency.  In musical terms, pitch
  44.  
  45. is the note you play.  High pitch =
  46.  
  47. high (trebel) note.  In medical
  48.  
  49. terms, pitch relates inversely to
  50.  
  51. temperature. The lower the
  52.  
  53. temperature of the stethoscope, the
  54.  
  55. higher the pitch of the scream.
  56.  
  57.   Each SID voice has its own pitch
  58.  
  59. registers, so each voice can have its
  60.  
  61. own pitch.  That means you can use
  62.  
  63. the three voices to play chords or
  64.  
  65. three-part harmony (or discords if
  66.  
  67. that's what you want).

  69.   If S=54272, then you set the pitch
  70.  
  71. for voice one by poking values into
  72.  
  73. S+0 and S+1.  What values?  That
  74.  
  75. depends entirely on what pitch you
  76.  
  77. want.  You can choose any of 65536

  79. values.  Values near zero are so bass
  80.  
  81. that they don't even seem to have
  82.  
  83. pitch - just a bunch of clicks.
  84.  
  85. Values above 256 fall in what is
  86.  
  87. generally considered the "musical"
  88.  
  89. range.
  90.  
  91.   But not all pitches are musical
  92.  
  93. notes. That is, not all of the 65536
  94.  
  95. pitches correspond to keys on a piano
  96.  
  97. keyboard.  In fact, only about 123 of
  98.  
  99. the 65536 pitches available to SID
  100.  
  101. are musical notes.  Which 123?  Well,
  102.  
  103. you'll just have to read on for that
